They lose communication in the first few minutes of the film. But an ordinary torch using Morse Code could establish one-way communication back to Earth, being visible to a good telescope. Yet we are told there was no contact.Also a fairly simple radio receiver could pick up a signal broadcast from Earth, so some sort of communication should be possible.
