When Armstrong looks at the Earth from the lunar surface, it is shown as a crescent about 25° above the southern horizon, a view that could only be seen a few days after the Moon's First Quarter and at a latitude of 65°N or thereabouts. Eagle landed two days before First Quarter, just north of the equator and a little over 23°E. The gibbous (ie: more than half illuminated) Earth would have been seen about 67° above the western horizon. Those impressive Apollo pictures showing the Earth at or near the lunar horizon are all taken from a Command Module in lunar orbit.
