There was no reason for Crewes to be on I-26, if he were heading from Georgia to New York City. I-26 goes northwest from I85 in South Carolina, and ends at I40 near Asheville, North Carolina. This would take Crewes several hours out of his way, and would also leave them subject to crossing two additional weigh stations as they backtracked across to I40 to get back to I85 so they could resume a course towards New York City - hardly a wise move for an unlicensed driver who was hauling illegal cargo. If they wanted to avoid detection, they would more likely take a secondary road, such as US221, to bypass the scales altogether. Correction, You can take I26 to north of Asheville, NC. The cut over to I81 north.
