In the second dream sequence with Dom and Ariadne, Dom cautions Ariadne that her changing the dream world will trigger an automatic response from his subconscious to attack the dreamer. How, then, does the "Mr. Charles" gambit work? Simply convincing someone that they are in a dream shouldn't prevent their subconscious (which they cannot control) from attacking the dreamer, even if they think the dreamer is there to protect them. However, our conscious and subconscious do interact with each other all the time without our awareness, so changes in the conscious mind definitely do bring about changes in the subconscious mind as well. Using the conscious to change the subconscious is not normally possible during sleep, but by making the conscious Fischer feel at ease in the dream, there are changes brought about in his subconscious that counteract the training he had received and therefore weaken his defenses.
