Though the family comes to the lake every year (the Masked Man says so), they came late in the season this time around, as the neighbor Owen mentioned, and their arrival would have been unpredictable. Yet the Masked Man was able to procure fancy cupcakes and poison them at a moment's notice, and also set up the string maze in the woods. Of course, he may have been planning the murders all year and set up and maintained the string maze at the start of the summer; but even so, he got lucky that the little girls noticed it and followed it into the woods. Plus, the concept of the film seems to be that the Masked Man took action this year because the husband happened to be delayed and the family was more vulnerable, rather than because he had been planning ahead.
