A little-known historical fact is that there was indeed a large battleship task force guarding the American coast, consisting of seven battleships (including three Pearl Harbor survivors) and their escorts. They were considered too slow to accompany the American aircraft carriers and too vulnerable to air attack (as demonstrated at Pearl Harbor) to operate independently against the Japanese fleet.
