Kennedy may have been a senator at the setting, but he wasn't among the few most well-known U.S. politicians (after President Eisenhower). Additionally, the time he was most visible in the news was when Candidate Adlai Stevenson was considering him for running mate (but Estes Kefauver got the pick), which was several months after the November 1955 setting.
