There has been confusion written about the command structure as shown in the movie. Regardless of how Tambul communicated his rank, he wore the rank of Staff Sergeant in the United Kingdom's Army forces. It was the highest enlisted rank in the UK, during World War II, with Warrant Officer being the next highest. Gunn was a US Army Master Sergeant, and during World War II, that also was the highest enlisted rank in the US Army. So, both were equal in rank. The British Captain was a medical officer, and therefore prohibited from commanding any line unit. Line units are combat units, and medical officers are non-combatants. Therefore, the movie got this complex command structure entirely correct. MSgt Gunn would have remained in command of his tank and tank crew regardless of rank, and moreover, in tactical command of the combined operation given he was the senior combatant officer on scene.
