Following refueling, the shuttle continues to lunar orbit using the main engines. Sorry! Main engines are fed using liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, hence the external tank. There is NO on board storage for extra propellant for the main engines. Reaction control and OMS engines use different propellants (not sure about fuel, think oxidizer is nitrogen tetroxide - NASTY stuff), so refueling these DOES make sense.
