The end of the Civil War is conveyed by a newspaper headline describing General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. However, that was only the surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The war itself was not declared over for another month. However, Confederate troops already seem to have been decommissioned within a few days and have gone home to their families and a Union colonel is riding around the countryside telling Confederate stragglers where to go to be demobbed.
