When Traven looks at Annie's handcuffs on the subway, he says that he doesn't have a key. Handcuffs can be removed with a piece of wire, a bobby pin, or even the pin on a pair of earrings - not to pick the lock, but to slide into the side of the handcuffs, pushing the ratchet off of the notches in the cuffs.
