When the Moonfish appear to give Marlin and Dory various shapes including a swordfish, a lobster, and a sailing ship, the viewer can easily recognize them, but it's impossible for Marlin and Dory to recognize them as they are looking from the left side and see the flipped image, a flat line of fish.
