At the beginning of the film Eliza asks Henry to show her what he has been writing about her. When Henry shows her the book in which his notes have been written, it is not only made apparent that she can not read but she says it as well. Later in the film Henry gives Eliza pages to read from, where she seems to read difficult sentences without a problem.
