When the Enterprise was in the wormhole, an asteroid was pulled in with it. They had to destroy the asteroid so they wouldn't collide with it while they were still in the wormhole, since it would take too long for the Enterprise to slow down enough to get out of the wormhole. However, they exited the wormhole at the same time that the asteroid was destroyed, and it was still quite a distance away from the Enterprise, so collision was not a problem after all.
