The tattoo across John Wick's shoulders reads "Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat," which literally means "(the) strong (ones), Fortune helps", or "fortune favors the bold". This is a quote from a play by Terence, written in 161 BCE.
It is often misquoted in English texts as "fortes Fortuna adiuvat", which uses the accusative plural ending -es instead of the "Republican" accusative ending -is, making some believe that the quote is misspelled.
Apparently John knows a thing or two about antique playwrights.
