Although the Catholic Church historically denied funerals to members who had committed suicide, exceptions were allowed beginning in the 1960s in cases where mental illness or disturbance may have been a factor; funerals were only denied for members determined to be apostates or heretics, cases of non-approved motives for cremation, or where the deceased's scandalous life would cause grave harm to the Church. In 1983 the Church completely dropped the prohibition, a position formalized in 1992 in Pope John Paul II's new Catechism.
