The car crash shows the 1941 Lincoln hitting a large tree. Coral subsequently dies from her injuries, and Rip, even after being shot in the side from the side (greatly increasing the chances of a serious internal injury), only has his left arm in a sling. Due to the nature of the crash and the vehicle involved (no seatbelts or airbags), Rip would have impacted the steering wheel with his chest, and both of them would have hit the windshield, causing head injuries. He certainly would not have been ambulatory as was shown.
