The alien creates a spaceship by using a massive field to metal things to the water tower. Indeed, the magnetic force, if it is that, is so strong that it lifts a soldier 6(?) feet off the ground as he clings to his rifle. However, despite the continuing stream of metal object towards the water tower, there are other soldiers still holding rifles, and most cars remain stationary. However we don't understand what forces of nature the alien is harnessing in order to achieve the ship morphing, so we shouldn't pretend we understand how he attracts the metal or even how he selects what gets attracted.
