On the third day when one group of five goes to check out abandoned mines, Evan takes a car and returns immediately to the house. It is dark when he gets there, meaning the mines were very far away or they left on the trip later in the day than it seemed (it seemed everyone had only recently woken up). Regardless, they would not have started a hike with so little daylight left. The group that stayed would have had little time before darkness made it too unsafe to be out on the rocks, and likely would have struggled to drive back in the dark.
