The mother wouldn't have been able to get a veterinary prescription without first presenting a pet to a veterinarian which required that specific medication, and it is shown the family have no pets. However, when they get out of their car to go into the movie theater, a bumper sticker can be seen on the car that reads "DOG POUND VOLUNTEER, WHO RESCUED WHO?", so the mother likely borrowed a dog from the pound where she volunteered.
