Though it will hardly be noticed by the average viewer, the steam locomotive used in the film, Milwaukee Road S3 class 4-8-4 Northern 261, was not built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) until July 1944 (builder number 7197e). It was retired in 1954, donated to a museum in 1958, and was returned to operation in 1993 by the current owners, the Minneapolis-based non-profit Friends of the 261. Scenes for the film were shot on 12 Track, on the south side of Chicago Union Station in December 2008.
