Sam was at the tree lighting ceremony with the Weatherbys, during which Sheriff Best reports that Dr. Gerrow has died. After the ceremony Sam goes with the Weatherbys to their house, then later that night calls his boss and says that by the time he got to Gerrows house he was already dead. Sam didn't go to Gerrow's house before then, he didn't go until the next day, to get the gun.
