Mars once had a magnetosphere, billions of years ago, that prevented its atmosphere from being blown off the surface by the solar wind. This magnetic field has long since disappeared, and with it most of Mars' atmosphere. Any attempt to establish a new thick atmosphere that allows for human habitability would fail, as these gasses would quickly dissipate into space, leaving again a barren, dry and cold world.
