When the Orca first encounters the shark, Quint puts a barrel on him. The shark returns later and tries to sink the boat but fails. The shark returns in the morning and Quint yells "Tie me up a barrel, Hooper!" He shoots it. They give chase and he shoots it again without anyone tying up another barrel. That's three barrels. After Brody unloads his pistol on the shark, another barrel mysteriously flies off the boat. That's four barrels. Quint runs by and three barrels are still on the boat.
