When Matrix prepares for is final assault, he loads his gear into a rubber boat and paddles it in dressed in a swimsuit. He is running out of time, and is entering hostile and unknown terrain. An experienced commando would have suited up in the plane and rowed in prepared to begin the assault as soon as they hit the shore.
