When the children are to be leaving for Spain, they are moved from a mountain cave through the help of a woman who lives well outside of town. However, they are taken through the village streets to make their escape. There is no apparent reason for them to do so other than to ramp up some suspense when a German soldier leaves the church, making them visible to him if he turns around.
