The timer goes off and she takes the freshly-baked pie from the oven. It's in a glass pie pan. She handles it with a cloth since obviously it's supposed to be hot. She hands it to him with the cloth underneath but when he takes it, he puts his thumb on the glass and leaves it there much longer than it would take to burn his thumb very badly had the pan actually been hot.
