Although a joking remark, Iceman would not deliberately have Maverick as his wingman. Any aviator gets a wingman detailed by the operations officer, schedule officer or the Squadron Commanding Officer. Iceman would never be able to intentionally pick his wingman in reality. See 1:41:14.
