The film was shot on anamorphic lenses, as is apparent from the characteristic lens flares and the oval bokeh of background objects. E.g. in the shot during the gathering at the Arecibo telescope by night, when Palmer Joss tells Ellie about his job, the out of focus highlights of the telescope behind Palmer yield such an oval bokeh; in the very next scene, however, during the "Awful waste of space" dialogue, the Telescope's highlights yield a round bokeh, as the two actors were filmed in front of a green screen and the telescope was a composited in plate filmed with spherical lenses.
