Early in the film, when the signal has just been picked up, the team is investigating the nature of the signal and its origin. It is identified as being amplitude modulated (AM). The display on the oscilloscope with the orange trace, shows an AM carrier wave, modulated by a tone of around 2kHz, with its two (over-modulated) sidebands (plus 2kHz and minus 2kHz) clearly shown. The signal heard over the loudspeakers bears no resemblance whatsoever to the signal being displayed.
