In the initial conference room meeting when "R_0" is written on the whiteboard, it is written as it would appear on a typed movie script or in ASCII text, not how it would be written by hand on a whiteboard by a doctor or scientist. For writing it by hand, the "0" is written as a subscript below and to the right of "R". This cannot be done in plain text, so it is often written as "R_0" in text editors that cannot make subscripts, but it would never be written this way by hand.
