Whitaker says that the Duke of Wellington needed German mercenaries to defeat Napoléon Bonaparte. In fact, the only German troops in Wellington's army, the King's German Legion, were part of the regular British Army. (King George III of Great Britain was Elector of Hanover in Germany; when the French invaded, many Hanoverians fled to Britain to form the KGL). The other Germans at Waterloo were the Prussian Army who were not under Wellington's command.
