The U-53, a type VIIB u-boat, was sunk on 23 February 1940 in the North Channel by HMS Gurkha, not late in the war. The same fictionalised name was used for the U-boat which effected the unwanted 1943 German rescue from an Adriatic island in another British film, Don't Panic Chaps.
