The idea of a nail sticking several inches upwards through a step on a wooden staircase where Lee has trod barefoot many times and has carefully painted footprints to avoid stepping on squeaky boards is totally ludicrous. It is even more ludicrous that Evelyn doesn't remove it as soon as it makes itself known by impeding the movement of the sack of corn. What's more, she doesn't even remove the nail after it impaled her foot.
