When Capt Stilwell pulls the pin on the grenade, he could easily have reinserted the original pin, or a paper clip, or use cellophane tape to secure the spoon to the grenade body. Also, the grenade was obviously a blue (with white markings) G918 practice grenade body M69 which would have a hole in the bottom (unlike a fragmentation grenade which would be olive drab with yellow markings). The grenade spoon, if seen more clearly, would have been blue with a white tip G870 (indicating low explosive practice, vs. an olive drab spoon with yellow tip indicating a high explosive fuse).
