Louis finds his father's officer's tunic in a trunk. He also has his father's army bugle. The fact is that his father was not an officer but a private. He was a lowly sapper, which is a soldier who works on roads, buildings, earthworks, breastworks and the like. As such, there is no reason why his father would have had a bugle. The idea that he had been a major was an invention of Anna Leonowens.
