Colonel John Marlowe (John Wayne) states that his cavalry force consists of 1st Illinois, 1st Michigan, and 2nd Iowa Regiments. The film is based in the spring-summer 1863. The 1st Illinois had been disbanded since December 1862. The 1st Michigan spent its entire service in the Eastern Theater. By the summer of 1863, they were part of the Michigan Brigade commanded by Brig. General George A. Custer.
