The film features the historical Sonderkommando revolt of 7th October 1944. The event is shown as it happened according to historical sources, even if it's maybe simplified and condensed because of the limited time and perspective. That some people doubted the accuracy of this depiction resulted from a lack of historical knowledge and the popular, but misleading depictions of the revolt in the earlier films La passeggera, Oltre la vittoria and La zona grigia, which expert Andreas Kilian criticized as "exaggerated" in a 2014 article. Fact is for example, that the Sonderkommando members had no guns to defend themselves and that there was no explosion in a crematory, only a fire. The cinematic depiction in Il figlio di Saul is the most accurate yet.
