On day #1 the police came to her home to inform her of her husband's death. Then viewers find out she was at the scene of the crash and witnessed her husband's death. So a police officer would not have had to come to tell her of the accident.However the way the "time travel" works in the movie is that Linda re-lives the days leading up to Jim's accident, changing what happens on those days. Only the second time around was Linda at the scene; in other words it happened the second time she experienced Wednesday, whereas the officers told her of Jim's death the first time she experienced Thursday.
