The film is supposed to portray a fictional town in Hope, Somewhere, USA, but is in fact filmed in real Hope, B.C. Canada. A revealing indication of its true location is the Turbo gas station appearing in the town shots. Turbo Gas was a Canadian-only franchise that had a logo with a Canadian maple leaf in it.
