Even though the Germans retreated to the Hindenburg line in the film, the German trenches seen at the start of the film wouldn't actually be totally abandoned. Many Germans would actually remain in the trenches in the event of enemy movement which was the case with Schofield and Blake. As a matter of fact it would be more likely the reserves would take over on the front line while the main army retreated.
