When Amelia's first round-the-world attempt crashes on the runway in Hawaii, only Amelia and Fred Noonan are on board. The plane actually had three occupants, the third being U.S. Naval Officer Harry Manning. When Amelia made her second attempt to fly around the world, Manning stayed behind. Manning later served in World War II and retired with the rank of Vice Admiral in the US Navy Reserve.
