Before the nuclear explosion, the fleet ships sail very close together. Even after being alarmed, they don't spread out. In fact, after the bomb goes off, they are still so close together, debris being blown off one destroyer hits the next ship. In reality, besides never sailing that close together in open waters, the ships would spread out at full speed after being advised of a nuclear threat.
