The telephones on the desks at the US Coast Guard station are Avaya One-X 9600 IP desktop telephones. These have a backlit LCD display and softkeys which would light up in the event of an incoming call. When the ensign and lieutenant are answering the distress calls the displays on these telephones are clearly blank, which indicate that they are not connected to anything.
