When Quaid passes through the security x-ray checkpoint, an audible recording can be heard advising travelers that they are entering a safety zone and no unauthorized weapons are allowed beyond this point. Later in the movie when Quaid is being pursued by Richter and his goons, he triggers an alert on the x-ray scanner with the gun he hid under his shirt, alerting the security officers. As they move behind the x-ray scanner to try to subdue Quaid, their guns also trigger an alert on the scanner, even though the officers' weapons would obviously be authorized.
