When SBO Ramsay meets the Commandant for the first time, he is told (among other things) that his men will be given tools for gardening. Later, the Commandant contradicts himself when he sees the men gardening and now he is dismayed; he tells SBO Ramsay that he is surprised that his officers, who are supposed to be gentlemen, are "scratching in the dirt like peasants".
