In Plato's dialogues "Timaeus" and "Critias", the gods give Atlantis to Poseidon, whom, in turn, gives it to his son Atlas. Atlas, in turn, parses Atlantis out between his sons while Poseidon gives Atlantean land to his other sons, making each a king in his own right. Atlantis then launches a campaign of conquest, and is defeated by a coalition lead by Athens. She then falls out of favor with the gods, and is sunk into the Atlantic. Atlanna tells Arthur that the ocean destroyed Atlantis because it was jealous of Atlan's mastery of the seas. Vulko tells Arthur that Atlantis was the victim of Atlan's and his subjects' ambition and hunger for power.
