After the shootout with the police, Steve is driving with one of the gun thugs in the passenger seat of the truck. The gun thug's gun is laying on the seat and the gun thug is passed out on the floor. As a military veteran, Steve would be familiar with guns. He could have taken it and used it to hold the gun thug or simply tossed it out the window. He then could have gone straight to the police since his wife had not been threatened at that point.
