When fighters did carry bombs, which is usually not the case on an escort mission where they would have detachable fuel tanks, the first thing they did when engaging the enemy was to drop any external loads they have to gain maximum performance from the aircraft. There is no way a fighter returning from an escort mission that involved combat would still have a bomb left to drop.
