The mess of books and newspapers in Byron's hotel room changes from the night before to the next morning, with no one being awake or in the room to change them before Byron woke up. For example: the newspapers on the left of the fireplace mantel were neatly stacked the night before when Byron and Sam passed out in the bedroom, but the next morning they were messy and falling off the mantle. Also, the red and black books on the floor next to the chair Byron sat in were gone the next morning.
